NYN / NYSBA Internship Program Mission

The NYSBA/NYN Media Internship Program is a unique opportunity for students interested in a broadcasting career to get both practical, working newsroom experience, and an education on the structure of New York State government and politics.
Each intern will have the opportunity to cover news at the State Capitol as a credentialed, working journalist and will experience, first hand, all aspects of a television news gathering organization. They will participate in story selection, and then produce television-ready pieces on a daily basis. The work experience will be augmented with critiques of each story, discussions of government operations and functions, and seminars with professionals from both journalism and government.
Upon completion of the program, students will have a significant understanding of New York State government and the political process, and will have newsgathering and reporting experience that will be invaluable as they begin their broadcasting careers.
Eligibility
The program is open to Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students enrolled in New York State colleges and universities. Candidates must have a 3.0 GPA or better. A broadcast and/or journalism major is not necessary, but the related skills are a must!
Strong oral and written communication ability, as well as some reporting and technical/production skills, are essential.
Requirements
Each intern will be responsible for arranging and paying for his/her own expenses for lodging and transportation in Albany. Stipends WILL NOT be available in the Spring 2006 semester.
The Media internship
Program will certify academic credit awarded by a
student's home campus if/when the student satisfactorily
completes the tasks assigned on a daily basis. In addition, they must meet all requirements established by their home campus.
Because the internship simulates the workplace, daily attendance is mandatory. Absences for illness must be excused by the Director; vacation and/or personal days can be arranged with the Director. However, each intern’s success is a function of the work they do and they are expected to be on the job as any employee would.
As working journalists, interns must adhere to the code of conduct of the profession. They must dress and act like the professionals with whom they are working. Their attitude, deportment and conduct of business must reflect favorably upon the New York Network, the New York State Broadcasters Association, and, most importantly, themselves.
