NYN / NYSBA Internship Program Overview

NYN/NYSBA internsThe Media Internship Program is a collaborative effort of the New York State Broadcasters Association, and the New York Network.  Housed in the state-of-the-art studios of the New York Network at Albany’s Empire State Plaza government center, the program gives students the opportunity to work alongside the professional Capital press corps, reporting, writing, shooting and editing TV news stories involving the Governor, the Legislature, and other government agencies.  It is an education in both television news gathering and government.

The interns will report to the New York Network in early January, at the start of the New York State Legislative session.  Each weekday they will take on roles in a simulated TV newsroom; reviewing, prioritizing and selecting stories, then reporting, shooting, writing and editing those stories by deadline.  Natural sound versions of their packages will be fed, via satellite, to NYSBA-member stations around the State for use on local newscasts.  The interns retain voiced copies of their stories for their resume tapes and for use at their home campus.

This is a non-paying internship. The New York Network will certify academic credit to be awarded by the home campus. Students will pay tuition at their home campus; room and board charges can be redirected to cover Albany living expenses.

The Director:

The NYSBA/NYN Media Internship Program Director, Jim Brennan, is a veteran of radio and television news in the Albany, N.Y. market.  He currently produces and hosts New York Week in Review on New York Public Television.  For ten years he was the 6:00PM and 11:00PM news anchor at WTEN, Albany’s ABC affiliate.  Prior to that, he had a sportscasting career in play-by-play, color commentary, and TV sports anchoring.  He has a B.A. in mathematics from Holy Cross.

Please note:  The New York Network is a television production facility and a part of the State University of New York, but it is NEITHER a college nor a university.  It DOES NOT offer any classes, and DOES NOT award any credit.  The Media Internship Program DOES offer students a practical education in TV news gathering in a high profile political venue.
